Intuitively, many Americans would assume that there exists a positive correlation between the quality of public schools and the median home price in a neighborhood. Demand for better teachers and schools should, in theory, drive up the value of homes in the vicinity.
In San Antonio Metro, there’s a wide range in the quality of public schools, just as there is in any metropolitan area. What’s interesting in San Antonio Metro is that the zip codes inside of the metro area seem to have a stronger positive correlation between public school quality and the median home sale price than most metro areas.
FindTheHome collected information on median home sale prices in a zip code from publicly available county records. They plotted these median home prices against the average public school rating of the schools in those zip codes, provided by StartClass using data from the National Center for Education Statistics. The Bang For Your Buck score weighs the average public school rating and median home sale price equally and assigns a higher score to zip codes with lower home prices and better schools. As a note, only zip codes that contain a school and have recorded a home sale within the past month were considered.
